A Heart of Service

In a culture that often measures success by personal achievements, status, and recognition, Jesus presents a radically different standard: one rooted in humility and service. True greatness in God's kingdom is not about how high we can climb, but how willing we are to lower ourselves in love for others. From washing the feet of His disciples to giving His life on the cross, Jesus exemplified what it means to serve selflessly. He calls us to follow in His footsteps, not seeking applause or reward but embracing a life of service as an act of worship to God. Jesus is calling all of us, you and I, to a life of service. True greatness in God’s kingdom is not about status but about humbly serving others.

1. Jesus as the Ultimate Example

Mark 10:45 (ESV)
"For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Jesus, the Son of God, did not come seeking honor or prestige, but He came to serve and sacrifice. If He, the King of Kings, humbled Himself to serve others, how much more should we?

2. Serving Others as Serving Christ

Matthew 25:35-40 (ESV)
"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’"

Every act of service, whether feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, or caring for those in need are ultimately service unto Christ Himself.

3. Serving with the Right Heart

Colossians 3:23-24 (ESV)
"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ."

When we serve, we don’t do it for recognition, applause, or rewards from others. We do it for God’s glory. Even small acts of kindness, done with the right heart, have eternal significance.

This week conduct an evaluation of yourself. Ask yourself key questions about your heart, about seeing others as God sees them. Examples of questions could be: Do I have a servant’s heart, or do I only serve when it is convenient? Am I willing to serve even if no one notices? How can I be the hands and feet of Jesus today?

Prayer

"Heavenly Father, thank You for the perfect example of service through Jesus Christ. Help me to serve with humility, love, and joy. May we each see opportunities to serve others as opportunities to serve You. Help us see people as you see them. Give us willing hearts to love and care for those in need. In Jesus’ name, Amen."
